No action yet on add'l tuna supply in city's wet markets

THE DAVAO City Council's resolution to urge tuna suppliers to increase daily supply allocation for wet markets in the city was already endorsed to Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pi¤ol, an official of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-11 (Bfar 11) said.

Last July, Councilor Conrado Baluran spearheaded the crafting of the resolution that would allow tuna suppliers increase their supply from 3.5 tons to 20 tons daily after he requested Bfar 11 to commence the order.

Bfar 11 regional director Fatma Idris, in an interview, said the request was not immediately submitted to Pi¤ol due lack of required documents such as a resolution or a proposal letter from the City Council.

"They already know that I'm supportive to that idea but the request should come from the city itself not from me representing Bfar 11," she said.

There were series of consultations, Idris said, that were done last August to construct the resolution.

The resolution was directed to the Office of the President, the Department of Agriculture (DA), the National Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (NFARMC), and Bfar Central Office.

Idris said she endorsed the resolution last week of August to Secretary Piñol through DA Undersecretary Eduardo B. Gongona.

"However, we still do not receive any feedback from either the Secretary or Gongona until now and we cannot move forward or create technicalities toward the suppliers and importers of tuna yet," she said.

The increase of tuna supply in the city, Idris said, is seen as necessary as the city has a growing population with food businesses are expanding, thus increasing its demand.

Also, the Davao Fish Port Complex (DFPC) in Barangay Daliao, Toril District, the second major fishing port established in Mindanao, will also expanded by the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA).

PFDA General Manager lawyer Glenn Pangapalan said an extended capacity to cater a 20-metric ton increase of tuna supply for the wet markets in the city is expected once the DFPC is improved.
