Abducted cop freed by rebels in Compostela Valley

THE communist rebels released on Friday afternoon the police officer who was held for over three months by the New People's Army (NPA).

Police Regional Office-Davao spokesperson Catherine dela Rey said that around 1:30 p.m., Senior Police Officer 2 George Canete Rupinta, 52, was freed by his captors in Barangay Sangab, Maco, Compostela Valley province.

Rupinto, who was assigned in Lupon Municipal Police Station, was abducted last June 9 in Barangay Langka, Lupon town, Davao Oriental province.

NPA spokesperson Rigoberto Sanchez admitted that they were behind the abduction of the cop for alleged "anti-people activities" of Lupon police.

Rupinta was turned over to Reverend Socrates Ibol at UCCP Tagum City, Davao del Norte, and was immediately brought to the doctor to undergo medical examination and psychosocial debriefing.
