Local players assure pork supply for Christmas

THE local hog industry in the city said pork supply in Davao Region is sufficient to meet the demands during the approaching Christmas season despite the problem on spot zoning which has caused some hog growers to suspend temporarily its business operations.

Davao Hog Farmers Association (DHFA) President Eduard So, during the Kapehan sa Dabaw on Monday, September 18, held at SM City Davao Annex Building, said the supply will not be affected even after some hog growers had to close down their farms to settle the issue with spot-zoning as there is excessive amount of supply in big hog companies.

In spot-zoning, So said business owners have to seek a permit that will allow them to use their land differently than presently permitted under the local zoning law.

"Most of the affected farms with the spot-zoning here in the city are those backyard or small-time hog raisers because their farms are usually situated inside residential areas," he said.

So added exporting of pork from Davao region to Luzon and Visayas four months approaching the Christmas season is expected to triple due to initiatives on eradicating pork smuggling in these areas. The initiative resulted to pork shortages in Luzon and Visayas.
