'No more rotating brownouts'

THE power shortage is over.

This was announced by Anton Perdices, the Visayan Electric Company (Veco) chief of operations, in a lunch meeting Tuesday, September 19, at the City Sports Club in connection with the 25th Cebu Press Freedom celebration.

Perdices said that the switching station in Leyte that moves the power from Luzon to the Visayas has now been repaired.

“There hasn't been any onehour brownouts but that's not to say that there will be no brownouts in the future because we can't predict what will happen,” Perdices said.

“For now, we're good. We have ample power and even when the power line (between Luzon and Visayas) will cut, so long as none of the power generators in the Visayas will go down, we're okay. We will have power,” Perdices said.

He also said that Department of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi is pushing for the Visayas-Mindanao interconnection cable between either Dipolog or Zamboanga and Cebu.

He said there is a lot of supply of power in Mindanao.

“If ever the power line in Leyte goes down, this can be a backup line,” Perdices said.

He said that unlike Bohol, which only has one line connected to Leyte, Cebu is also connected to Negros (Occidental) and it can rely on power from Panay.

“At present, we already have ample power supply to serve the coming demand for Christmas, with all the Christmas lights and parties,” Perdices said.
