Man dead, wife injured in Mandaue City accident

A MAN died on the spot, while his wife was injured after a boom truck ran over them around 11:24 a.m. Wednesday, September 20, on North Reclamation Area in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

The fatality was identified as Nicolas Jumao-as Pacaldo, 32, while his wife, Ledy Lee, 34, reportedly suffered a broken arm. They are residents of Barangay Pilipog, Cordova.

Mandaue City Traffic Agency head Glen Antigua said Ledy Lee was rushed to the University of Cebu Medical Center for treatment.

A video from the Mandaue traffic unit showed the victims, who were onboard a motorcycle, were hit from behind. The truck was driven by Alan Sacil, 39, of Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City.

Antigua said Pacaldo reportedly tried to overtake the boom truck while taking a right turn to Mantawi Drive Extension from Ouano Avenue.

It also happened that the boom truck driven by Sacil veered in the same direction.

In an interview, Sacil said he did not notice the motorcycle as he was looking on his right side, preparing to make a right turn.

"Nakabantay ko niuntol nalang akong sakyanan (I just noticed that the truck bounced)," he said.

Antigua said the couple came from Cebu City and possibly brought some goods from Carbon Public Market .

"Naa may mga tinda sama sa mangga, santol ug mga duwaan. Posible itinda sa eskwelahan. Mao lage na delikado ang mo-overtake especially sa right side nya truck pa gyud iyang gi-overtikan. (There were mangoes, cotton fruit and some toys on the road. These were probably to be displayed in their store near a school. It is really dangerous to overtake a vehicle when turning right)," said Antigua.

Sacil was temporarily detained at the Mandaue City Police Office and will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, serious physical injury and damage to property. (PNB/With FMG of SunStar Cebu/SunStar Philippines)
