GBP, Makoto tie up to conserve mangrove

GLOBAL Business Power (GBP) Corp. and Makoto Metal Technology Inc. partnered, for the first time, to plant over 3,000 mangrove propagules in Consolacion, Cebu as part of their commitment to preserve the environment.

Makoto, one of the trusted machine parts provider of various industries, has been planting mangroves for five years now as its way of giving back to the environment.

“The partnership is a manifestation of our commitment to being a trusted and reliable partner of the community aside from providing power,” said Leah Diaz, GBP first vice president–Cebu Operations.

“This has been our second time to plant in Barangay Tugbongan, Consolacion. The site is ideal for planting mangroves because of the support we get from the barangay. We have seen how the community works together to grow and maintain the area,” said Sharneliza Paloma, an employee of Makoto.

As part of the project’s sustainability plan, Makoto representatives work closely with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office in monitoring the growth of the mangroves.

Makoto also recently signed a power supply agreement with GBP’s official retail energy arm, Global Energy Supply Corp. (GESC), under the Energy Regulatory Commission’s retail competition and open access (RCOA) scheme.

GBP is one of the leading independent power producers in the Visayas and Mindoro, with facilities located in Cebu, Iloilo, Aklan, and Mindoro.

It is currently developing a 2X335 MW supercritical coal-fired power facility in La Union, and has recently acquired a 50 percent interest in Mindanao-based Alsons Thermal Energy Corp., which serves as the holding company for all baseload coal-fired power plant assets of Alsons, Consolidated Resources Inc. (ACR).
