Art communities collide for DNF’s ‘Panagtagbo’

WHEN Davao Ngilngig Films (DNF) set out in full swing to call for a new collection of cinematic thrills, the festival also crafted to convey other ways of storytelling besides film.

"Currently, a lot of independent events are being held and I think it's a good thing," said Resa Embutin, one of the core members of the Davao Graphic Designers Community (DGDC), a local art initiative born in the locale with interest in graphic design and art in general.

The city's biggest graphic design and digital arts community marks its first official collaboration with the DNF as one of this year’s festival co-organizers.

Embutin said the Davao Ngilngig Festival is a one-of-a-kind event where they are able to celebrate the richness of local tales.

"It is also (an avenue) to showcase creativity through filmmaking and artistry," she said.

Some of the members from DGDC were also tapped to contribute artworks for DNF.

"This will be special because I got the chance to learn about local tales and apply them to my work," said Embutin, who is also one of the artists tapped to contribute artworks.

“Panagtagbo” is a new addition to the main festival program. This year, creatives were individually handpicked to immortalize town tales and superstitions through literature, street art, graphic design, sound art, and other media. The event will culminate through an interactive art exhibit featuring a zine (short for magazine) festival or a small press expo.

This will be Embutin’s first non-digital art exhibit.

“I appreciate how local creatives support each other. This is a good sign for local communities,” she said.

The artists and their works will be unveiled during “Panagtagbo,” one of the main festival events to be held at Morning Light Art Gallery and Shop (Quirino Branch), October 29, 2017.

The Davao Ngilngig Films festival, organized by Pasalidahay, which is presented by Malagos Garden Resort, and supported by Alpha Phi Omega, Cinema One Originals, Creative Ideas Prints and Ads Corporation, Davao Bloggers Society, JCI Kadayawan, Morning Light Art Gallery & Shop, Mindanao Times, and Mindanao Travel Channel as Minor Sponsors, will run from October 27 to 31, 2017.
