City monitors hazard areas

THE Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CDRRM) Office has been monitoring 12 barangays in Mandaue City that are prone to landslides and flooding, as rain is expected to persist in the next days.

CDRRM Officer Felix Suico Jr. said they are now on a blue alert, which means the CDRRM Office personnel will be available for 24 hours to monitor the situation and respond to emergencies.

Yesterday, Suico said they monitored the rise of water in some streets just like Gomez St., but it immediately subsided.

Whenever there was flood in the streets, he said, it only lasted for a maximum of 30 minutes.

The CDRRM Office identified nine barangays that are flood-prone areas: Tipolo, Subangdaku, Guizo, Mantuyong, Looc, Cambaro, Umapad, Paknaan and Cubacub.

The office did not receive any report of severe flooding in these villages as of 1 p.m. Monday.

“Amo gi-advise ang mga ginikanan nga palihog i-monitor ang mga kabataan nga di gyud moadto sa sapa kung ting-uwan aron lang magduwa-duwa (We advised the parents to monitor their children and do not allow them to go to the river during a heavy rain),” said Suico.

More than 50 families who are living near landslide-prone areas were advised to observe their surroundings and evacuate when they are told to do so.

Suico said there were seven families in Barangay Casili, 20 from Cubacub and 30 from Barangay Tawason whose houses are near an area that can be affected by a landslide.

The CDRRM Office has been closely coordinating with the barangay captains to prevent disasters.

Gi-remind nato sila magbinantayon gyud. I-double ilang alertness sa ilang (We remind the barangays to be alert at all times in their) areas,” Suico added. (FMG)
