Solid-waste management complex eyed

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said she envisions the city to have a solid waste management complex with a waste to energy machine, and a fully mechanized material recovery facility (MRF).

Duterte-Carpio, in an interview Monday, September 25, currently said the City Government is busy with engineering interventions to extend the life of the sanitary landfill in Tugbok, New Carmen and at the same time seeking for an area to build a solid management complex.

She added that the solid waste management complex will have a fully mechanized MRF and waste-to-energy (WTE) machine.

"We have a request to Japan international Cooperation Agency (Jica) for a fully mechanized MRF, and we also have a request to the Japanese government for a waste to energy grant," she said.

She said that it was Jica who asked the city to submit request.

"The Jica, they just asked us to submit, so it depends if it will be approved or not. If it will not be approved then we will find a way for it to be funded by the City Government, and if it will be approved, the city will only have land as counterpart. Same with the WTE, if it will be given to us we will not spend anything but if it’s not approved, the city government will allot budget for that," she said.

She said that papers for the request mechanized MRF has been submitted by the city to the National Energy Development Authority (Neda).

Neda already submitted to the Department of Foreign Affairs for approval.

She added that request for WTE grant was also forwarded to Neda.
