Remember that David was running away from Saul, whose corrupt leadership of the nation led many into the pit of pain and passive response to an evil leader. Bitter frustration dominated the heart of David, and ultimately, even in his prayers, you could quickly sense deep anger stemming from a deep wound. Inside the cave, David saw his raw humanity... as he vented out the hurts in his heart in prayer... praying in pain, praying out his anger of a complicated nature. David, in his broken state, looked up to God and breathed a prayer which religion would later sanitize. Angry prayers are offered to God not to man.
The book of Psalm is actually a long book of prayers. Psalm 58 shows David as a real human being with real hurts. Human frailty and hurts are divine invitations to avail of God's healing. Here, brokenness is the bridge to healing and deliverance... not only from the evil people but deliverance from self!
Angry prayers and brokenness are mysterious blends that help us draw closer to God just as we are. We learn to really release our emotions, expressing our wounds in words, pouring out every toxic element onto the gracious heart of Abba. Only then can we come out whole and healed and ready to really depend upon God and to delight in His greatness and grace.
Psalm 58, a Psalm of Brokenness and Angry Prayers, is actually an example of the breadth of God's mercy which we can avail of any time leaving us free to expel, spit out our deep wounds. This is the opportunity for healing and closure enabling us to jump from being wounded into authentic worshipers of God. Through the painful and embarrassing process of this unique brokenness, many David’s will come down from their high places and experience true spiritual rest and healing. Be angry and sin not in your anger is actually applied here. Here are some insights: Frustrations not confessed to God robs us of faith in God. We use words, angry words poured before God, for the Gracious Physician of all understands that those words are caused by deep wounds rather than a loose and foul mouth. God can handle all the anger that you pour upon Him, realize that the people you say you love are the most unfortunate beings of all as they absorb all your venoms. Therefore, let brokenness release your angry prayers to God and in return, God turns your pain into perspectives, your bitterness into brokenness and then, enjoy a spiritual breakthrough!
