PHL teams split matches in SEA beach volley in Singapore

THE Philippine women’s beach volleyball squads split their matches in the first day of competitions of the 29th Southeast Asian Beach Volleyball Championships, which opened yesterday at Palawan Beach in Sentosa Island, Singapore.

Cebuana Cherry Ann Rondina and Bernadeth Pons dropped their first match against Thai Pair Numwong Rumpaipruet and Hongpak Khanittha, 15-21, 21-12, 15-5 but made up for it with a win over Malaysia’s Winnie Lim and Dawn Lynn, 21-14, 21-5.

Meanwhile, the other Filipina duo Patty Jane Orendain and Fiona Caballos won over Singapore’s Chong and Lee, 21-10, 21-10 but later lost to Vietnam, 21-19, 22-20.

Singapore’s Eliza Chong and Gladys Lee, Vietnam’s Thi Hoa Mai and Thi Cam Thi Tran also scored their respective matches yesterday.

A total of 30 matches were played across three courts with the remaining 12 matches to be played today.

“Singapore is a very good beach volleyball venue because of its location and the conditions in Singapore are quite similar to Thailand, but we will still need to be careful not to make any mistakes,” says Thailand’s national coach Kamoltip Kulna. (MCB/With PR)
