LRT-MRT Common Station finally to be built in QC

A COMMON Station that will cater to nearly 500,000 railway commuters will soon rise in Quezon City after "almost a decade of legal entanglements," the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Friday.

The DOTr, along with private sector partners, held the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, September 29, of the P2.8 billion project at the North Triangle Transport Terminal in Quezon City.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said during the ceremony that in "2.5 to 3 years, the Common Station will be ready," as he asked the people for their "trust and confidence" with the government.

DOTr said the Common Station will cover approximately 13,700 square meters of concourse area and this will be built between SM North Edsa and Trinoma.

The project will connect Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), MRT-7, and the planned Metro Manila Subway.

"The Common Station is expected to serve approximately 478,000 rail passengers daily by 2020," DOTr said.

The Common Station was initially planned to be built during the Arroyo government and was also discussed during the Aquino administration. But the government failed to come up with a final decision as to where it should be located as case was also filed before the court. (SDR/SunStar Philippines)
