The lead cast in this year's reenactment are basketball player Derick Hubalde, who plays the role of Datu Lapu-Lapu, Cebuana actress Dionne Monsanto as Reyna Bulakna, and actor Luis Alandy as Ferdinand Magellan.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said in her speech before the reenactment that today's activity is a tribute to Datu Lapu-Lapu's bravery.

She hopes that Lapu-Lapu's determination and dedication to protect Mactan may inspire residents to also protect the city and help it grow.

Department of Tourism (DOT)-Central Visayas Director Shalimar Hofer Tamano, meanwhile, announced that aside from the Battle of Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City has made another victory in 2017, citing it garnered more than one million foreign tourists last year, the biggest in Central Visayas.

He said the region got 2.9 million tourists in 2017, and Lapu-Lapu City ranked first, followed by Cebu City.

Majority of the tourists are Korean, Chinese and Japanese, he added.

Tamano said he is also excited for the opening of the Mactan Cebu International Airport's Terminal 2 in June, as this will help Central Visayas attain its target of 7.5 million tourists for 2018.

"I see a bright future for our city in 2018 and in the future," he said. (LMY/SunStar Philippines)
