Jealousy leads man to kill lover

LEO Zafra wasn’t remorseful when he narrated to reporters how he shot and killed 23-year-old May Azalia Albasin last Tuesday.

The 74-year-old businessman from Barangay Lawaan 1, Talisay City said he killed Albasin because she was going to leave him for another man.

Zafra also claimed that Albasin stole money from him for several years.

Around 8 a.m. last Tuesday, Zafra said he was on board his white SUV with Albasin when he decided to confront her about her alleged cheating.

He parked his car at the side of a local car dealership in the Cebu South Coastal Road.

Zafra said Albasin was stubborn and refused to answer his questions, but eventually confirmed his allegations.

Albasin angrily then told him that she wants out of their relationship.

Zafra begged Albasin not to leave him but she reportedly refused.

Out of anger, Zafra pulled out a pistol that he kept inside his car and threatened her.

But Albasin, according to Zafra, challenged him to shoot her. So he shot her in the leg.

Albasin screamed but she reportedly taunted him to kill her.

Further angered, Zafra shot her several times.

Realizing what he had done, Zafra drove his car to Barangay Linao in Talisay and dumped Albasin’s body a few meters away from her house.

Zafra then called one of his workers and asked him to prepare his motorcycle and meet him at a gasoline station in Lawaan 1.

He then went to Samboan and took a ferry bound for Dipolog City. He arrived there last Wednesday and proceeded to Sergio Osmena Sr. in Zamboanga del Norte.

He left his motorcyle in a hotel and looked for a quiet spot in Barangay Venus where he planned to commit suicide.

After burying his cellular phone and some of his personal belongings, Zafra drank 10 capsules of Valium, an oral sedative.

Zafra then attempted to shoot himself but the gun did not go off.

Zafra walked for a few meters when he encountered a barangay tanod and sought his help.

He told the tanod that he was robbed but when local police saw the gun tucked on his hip, he was immediately arrested.

Upon arriving in Cebu yesterday, Zafra underwent a series of examinations, including a paraffin test.

Zafra denied mauling Albasin and said it was the other way around. He showed reporters his bruises.

Despite what happened, Zafra said he’s willing to go to jail and pay for what he did.

Zafra said he learned a valuable lesson from the incident.

“We should not love too much because we don’t know if we are just being used or not. We should not give all our love to someone. Besides, if they leave us, we can still find another one,” he said in Cebuano.
