SECOND seed University of Southern Philippines Foundation opened its semifinal campaign with a dominant two-set win over the third seed Southwestern University, 25-22, 25-13, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) high school girls volleyball competition held at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation gym yesterday.
USPF, which finished behind the University of San Jose-Recoletos after the elimination round, found SWU a tough customer in the opening set before pulling a 25-22 win.
However, the host team suddenly found a chink in SWU’s defense and pounded them hard for a 25-13 decision in the second set.
USJ-R, on the other hand, held back the efforts of the University of Cebu for a two-set win in the other high school girls game.
After winning the opening set 25-15, USJ-R suddenly faced a tough challenge from UC as they went for a deuce before finally beating the fourth seed team, 26-24. in the second set.
In the boys competition, top seed SWU needed a deciding third set before beating No. 4 team USC, 23-25; 26-24 and 25-23 and USPF scored a two-set win 25-14, 25-17 over UC at the start of the semifinal round.
In the women’s volleyball competition, the University of San Carlos Lady Warriors proved too much for UC Lady Webmasters following a three-set win, 25-19, 25-10 and 25-18 while the SWU Lady Cobras needed four sets before beating USPF, 21-25, 25-8, 25-15, 25-18. (RCM)
