Bunkhouses in landslide area ‘must be torn down’

THE Mandaue City Office of the Building Officials (OBO) suggested to demolish the bunkhouses inside the compound of a private company in Barangay Cabancalan where a landslide happened last week.

Engr. Andres Suson, head of OBO, said they noticed that the soil in the riverbank has continuously eroded.

The City Engineer's Office and OBO inspected the area inside the compound of Treasurer Island (TI) in Cabancalan after the riverbank in the area collapsed affecting 17 structures last Friday afternoon.

These were bunkhouses for TI employees. The area is near the Butuanon River.

OBO is investigating if there was an easement violation committed by the company.

Suson said they will also check if the bunkhouses are included in TI's permit.

If the TI company committed easement violations, City Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing said the possible penalties are fines. Management will also be compelled to follow the right easement.

Quisumbing said that TI has been there for quite some time and there might have been factors that moved the soil of the riverbank.

"This is precisely why we need the River Summit because our waterways in Mandaue, especially the Butuanon River, are in terrible shape because of decades of abuse and neglect. That's the reason why easement and zoning are important to make sure these things don't happen," the mayor said.

At least 60 residents were moved to a safer place within TI's compound.

No one was injured by the landslide.

Quisumbing said that the only reason no one was injured at that time of the incident was that it happened while everyone was still at work.

"This is precisely why we have to rehabilitate all the waterways in Mandaue," he added. (FMG)
