10 villages in Bacolod get shredding machines

THE City Government of Bacolod distributed shredding machines to 10 host villages in rites held at the Bacolod Government Center Monday, October 2.

The distribution was led by Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.

Familiaran, chairman of Solid Waste Action Team (Swat), said the shredding machines were given to Barangays 30, Cabug, Pahanocoy, Handumanan, Sum-ag, Felisa, Granada, Mandalagan, Taculing, and Alangilan.

Other recipients are the city’s three major public markets and the City Agriculture Office.

“We are hoping that there will be an increase of compliance in the implementation of ‘no segregation, no collection’ policy,” Familiaran added.

The host-villages will shred the biodegradable waste to be used for organic farming.

The City Government purchased 14 units of shredding machines worth P5 million from the RU Foundry and Machine Shop Corp. also based in Bacolod.

Familiaran said they already trained the host-barangays on how to operate the shredder machine and they should handle it with care.

He said that by next year, additional shredder machines will be purchased to accommodate other villages who are also willing to host.

“We should comply with the law like the implementation of no-smoking ordinance which involves health and environment concerns,” the vice mayor added.

Familiaran earlier said they will start penalizing violators of the waste segregation policy middle of October.

He said all the 61 villages have been reached by the information and education campaign after the “no segregation, no collection” rule took effect on September 1.

Village officials were also provided the schedule of garbage collection, he added.

“We will not issue a warning anymore,” Familiaran said.

Fines range from P500 to P1,000.

The vice mayor said private garbage hauler IPM-Construction Development Corp. (IPM-CDC) will not collect unsegregated waste.

The IPM-CDC will collect the biodegradable waste every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, and non-biodegradable waste every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
