INSTEAD of chalks, markers, and other teaching materials, teachers held balloons, raised placards, and cheered for their co-teachers’ performance during Thursday’s Cluster Wide Celebration of the World Teacher’s Day held at the Davao City National High School.
A total of seven schools in Davao City participated at the Cluster Wide celebration. Different activities were also prepared to some several hundred teachers inside the venue.
It was a riot at the Hugyaw Magtutudlo competition with teachers from seven schools competing with each other.
Joining their teachers, students also cheered for their advisers during the dance competition.
Guest speaker Davao City Councilor Pilar Braga who was also an educator herself stressed that teaching is not just about working hard but also having the heart for the work.
“Teaching is the noblest profession,” Braga said.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio's surprise appearance was met with a resounding and extended cheer, much louder than the cheers during the competition.
As always, she was mobbed by those who wanted to have a photo with her amid continuous cheering from the bleachers.
During the mayor’s speech, she reminded teachers that they are the students' second parents and should thus treat the children with kindness. Mayor Sara urged the teachers to intensify sex education specifically to teenagers, to make the children understand the responsibilities and dangers of engaging in premarital sex.
It was indeed a fun filled day and a breather for the teachers capped with a free massage senior high students of City high.
For all teachers in the world, you’ve sharpened the minds of the students and proved for generations that the pen is mightier than a sword. Teaching indeed is one of the noblest professions. Happy Teacher’s Day!
