Duterte’s arrival in Bacolod moved to Oct. 22

THE arrival of President Rodrigo Duterte in Bacolod City has been moved to October 22, the closing highlights of the 38th MassKara Festival.

This was announced by Mayor Evelio Leonardia Saturday after his meeting with the group from the Presidential Management Staff at the Bacolod Government Center Friday.

Bureau of Internal Revenue Deputy Commissioner Jesus Clint Aranas, when he declared the festival officially opened on October 1, had initially announced that President Duterte will visit Bacolod on October 20.

Leonardia said he was informed that every week, the President goes home to Davao City and the chance for him to visit Bacolod is before he returns to Manila.

October 22 will feature the street dance and arena competitions at the Bacolod public plaza.

“In case the President will arrive during the time of the street dance, it will be interrupted for a while for us to listen to his speech,” Leonardia said.

On October 2 last year, Duterte officially opened the MassKara Festival at the public plaza.

Aranas, a Negrense, had earlier said it is historic that President Duterte will attend the MassKara Festival for the second time.

Leonardia also said: “It is the first time that a President will attend the highlights of the MassKara Festival. Let's give the credit to Deputy Commissioner Aranas, who facilitated the visit of President Duterte in Bacolod City.”

The mayor said some senators are also expected to arrive during the festival highlights, including Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, Senators Cynthia Villar, and Miguel Zubiri.

Leonardia appealed to MassKara revelers to cooperate with the security changes during the President’s arrival that could bring inconvenience.

“We should cooperate because this is the price that we have to pay. Having the President is something positive for the MassKara Festival,” the mayor said.
