Palace: Cop's dismissal serves as reminder vs erring PNP members

MALACAÑANG on Monday said the dismissal of a high-ranking police official caught sniffing shabu in March should serve as a reminder that the government is serious about getting rid of errant cops who "destroy the integrity" of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

In an order dated September 1, PNP chief Ronald Dela Rosa dismissed Police Superintendent Lito Cabamongan, former head of Alabang Crime Laboratory Satellite Office, for conduct unbecoming of a police officer, seven months after he was caught sniffing shabu at a house in Las Piñas City.

Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, in a press conference, said the PNP chief's order serves a "strong reminder" that rogue policemen that they should to do away with their illicit activities.

"The dismissal from service of Police Superintendent Lito Cabamongan… highlights the efforts to rid the ranks of misfits and scalawags that destroy the integrity of the entire organization," the Palace official said.

"The removal of a high-ranking officer serves as a strong reminder to the uniformed personnel to honor and to uphold always their sworn duty to serve and protect our people and our country," he added.

In the same press conference, Abella confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the dismissal from service of former National Capital Region Police Office chief Joel Pagdilao and former Quezon City Police District director Chief Superintendent Edgardo Tinio who he linked to illegal drugs.

Pagdilao and Tinio were dismissed for "serious neglect of duty and serious irregularity in the performance of duty."

Duterte has maintained that his campaign against illegal drugs would be relentless despite heavy criticisms locally and internationally following the deaths of thousands of suspected drug personalities. (SunStar Philippines)
