A servant of life

A SERVANT of life is a person who gives love and care at all cost. It is serving the humanity without bias and prejudice. It is being generous without counting the cost.

Let me share with you a young man who is brilliant and humble, passionate and determined, spiritual yet grounded, a rare example of a servant of life.

Dr. Cary Amiel Gil Villanueva, a 23-year-old, newly licensed physician who graduated from University of the Philippines College of Medicine with his father Dr. Joey Dinoy Villanueva and Mrs. Cynthia Jane Gil Villanueva, RN, MN took part in the successful whole-day medical mission at the Magtuod National High School, Davao City last October 3, 2017.

Ten days after passing the medicine licensure exam, Dr. Amiel thought of giving back the received many blessings from God to the needy by serving the community. There are about more than 50 patients served with cases like gastritis, respiratory tract infection, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, urinary tract infections and scabies. Free medicines are also provided and school supplies are distributed to the children in the community.

There were also volunteers who served in the medical mission like Luz Alilin, RN, Ma. Chona Villarosa, RN, Lyka Alilin and Joanna Alilin. The principal, Ms. Milrose Yvette Gultiano also assisted during the provision of health care.

Dr. Amiel Villanueva has always been on top even during his earlier schooling. He studied primary education at the Ateneo de Davao University, being the consistent top one student from Grades one to three, and belonged to the honors’ class until Grade 6. He placed third in a national science quiz contest in 2006. During his secondary education at the Philippine Science High School–Southern Mindanao campus, he graduated with the highest honors and received the Gerry Roxas Leadership Award, President GMA Excellence Award, DOST Secretary Award for Model Science Scholar and other countless awards. He finished Basic Medical Sciences, direct entrant in intramed program in 2015. In 2017, he garnered the most outstanding intern on Pediatrics and Psychiatry. In spite of all these achievements, he remained so humble, God-fearing and grounded.

Currently, Dr. Amiel seeks to pursue specialty training in internal medicine. He also hopes to do subspecialty and study bioethics in the future. He aspires to become a competent and compassionate doctor and an advocate for a culture of life and human dignity.

Dr. Amiel is a God-given gift for everyone! He is a dutiful son whose reverence to God are shown by way of his actions and words. He is the future five-star physician (medical practitioner, educator or leader, researcher and social mobilizer). When asked how he see the medical profession and vocation, he said that he shared Holy Father Francis thoughts that a doctor is a servant of life. Indeed, he is truly a man of God to all the lives he touches!
