Young adults gaining interest in farming

AN EXECUTIVE of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) said many young adults in the city are interested in considering farming as a secondary source of income.

DCCCII Business Development Director John Carlo Tria said around a hundred people ages 21 to 35 years old attended the three-day agriculture and farming seminars during the Davao Agri-Trade Expo on September 21 to 23.

The attendance of young adults, Tria said, has impressed the agriculture industry as the future of the industry will be upon the management of this present young generation.

"Our attendees said that farming is a practical choice of income source as it can be done even with a limited vacant land," he said.

Farming could also be through urban container gardening, backyard gardening, and Food Always in the Home gardening which is a home gardening technique that produces continuous and sufficient supply of fresh vegetables every day.

Young families, Tria added, also expressed to invest in planting their own fruits and vegetables to ensure the quality of the crops as many from this generation are health conscious or enthusiasts.

He added that they are also interested in raising native or vegan chickens as these do not need any commercial chicken feeds.

"We will have a healthier population if this young generation will really be serious about gardening and raising vegan animals," Tria said.

With the interest of young adults in farming and animal raising, it will open more business opportunities in the city adding that there will be more investments in poultry farms and vegetable production in the next three years.

At present, Tria said DCCCII and local agriculture sector are planning to conduct more seminars featuring different agricultural industries to educate more people and encourage them to invest in agribusiness.
