1 dead, 5 hurt in bus crash

ONE died, while five others were injured after a minibus lost its brakes and collided with several vehicles on the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) in Talisay City yesterday morning.

The accident occurred in a portion of the CSCR in Sitio Kalmar, Barangay Lawaan 1 at 6 a.m. yesterday.

Almond Keith Dela Peña, head of the City of Talisay Traffic Operation and Development Authority (CT-TODA), said a passenger minibus driven by Rafael Empleo, 44, was driving toward Cebu City.

Empleo was about to stop when the traffic light suddenly switched to green, prompting vehicles in front of him to go forward.

Rhinben Lapas, 34, from Carcar City, was on his motorcycle with his wife Chona and was in front of Empleo’s bus when he suddenly stopped in front of him.

Empleo’s minibus ran over Lapas and his wife. Lapas was dragged 20 meters away.

Lapas died in a hospital while his wife is currently in critical condition.

Four other motorcycle drivers were also hurt and were brought to the hospital for immediate medical attention.

Empleo surrendered to the police following the accident. (JKV)
