Regional Mango Summit set Oct. 19 to 20

THE Samahan ng Magmamangga ng Davao Region (SMDR) Inc. is gearing up for its first Regional Mango Summit slated October 19 and 20 at the Grand Men Seng Hotel, Davao City, as the sector is experiencing a drop in production.

SMDR secretary Wilfredo Sebuco said their association is composed of six provinces in the region and the summit is a follow-up to the Mango Forum earlier conducted by the Department of Agriculture.

Sebuco said the organization aims to at least formulate policy guidelines for mango industry, to identify the emerging concerns of the mango industry and establish the role of the industry.

SMDR president Richard Olores said the organization also aims to address the alarming decrease in the production of mangoes in Davao Region as mango growers are converted into banana growers.

Olores said the summit aims to bridge the gap between the small mango growers, suppliers and businessmen, and the local governments, with the hope of resolving the decrease in mango production.

The SMDR expects some 150 participants from Davao, Soccsksargen and Cebu regions, who will attend the summit next week, Olores said, adding that they would also like to hear the views of growers from other regions.

Based on the data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, there is a 2.89 percent decrease in mango production in Davao Region from 54,336 metric tons (MT) in 2015 to only 52,765 MT last year.

Most of these mangoes were produced in Davao del Sur with 41,975 MT in 2015 and 40,654.35 in 2016. Carabao mango production in Davao Region decreased by 3.10 percent from 48,721 MT in 2015 to only 47,212 mt in 2016.

Most carabao mango in the region is produced in Davao del Sur, with the province producing 40,335 MT in 2015 that went down to 39,024 MT in 2016.
