Lifestyle check on Mans Carpio 'unfair'

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio finds the lifestyle check on her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, "unfair" as the accusation that Manases is linked to the alleged "Davao Group" at the Bureau of Customs (BOC) is based on rumor.

The mayor, in a statement issued Tuesday, October 10, also said that it is premature to discuss anything based on the draft report as it has no factual basis.

"If indeed the recommendation of a lifestyle check on Atty. Mans find its way into the final committee report, my opinion is, it is an unreasonable recommendation mainly because it is based on chismis (rumors) of Mr. Mark Taguba and from the lies of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV," she said.

"Be as it may, I'd like to reiterate that I welcome the investigation of the Ombudsman since this will allow us to answer accusations and I also welcome a lifestyle check on my husband so that the issue is put to rest," she added.

Duterte-Carpio said that Trillanes is a paid troll.

"He is fishing for information with his lies and accusations. If indeed he is correct, bakit siya kukuha ng ebidensya sa amin? Kasi alam niya na hindi totoo ang sinasabi niya. Tapos na ang election. May nanalo na. Mag-antay siya ng election sa 2022 ulit (Why would he get evidence from us? Because he knows that what he says is not true. Elections are over. Someone has own. Maybe he can wait for the 2022 polls)," she said.

Based on reports, the committee, through the draft report, urged the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct a lifestyle check on Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte and Manases.

However, the committee, headed by Senator Richard Gordon, did not recommend the filing of charges against the two.

The same news report said it was stated in the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee report that "no evidence was established to connect the two to the smuggling of drugs or other contraband through our Bureau of Customs."

But under its recommendations, the committee said: "Personalities who, due to their close relationships to persons possessing high authority, are held to higher standards of accountability to the people precisely because of such close relationships. There are many examples that we are aware where rumors of close relationships abound, regardless of the administration in power."

Last September, Lawyer Carpio and Vice Mayor Duterte appeared in a Senate hearing and denied involvement on the Davao Group whose members were named by Taguba, a self-proclaimed BOC fixer, who appeared first in the Senate hearing on the P6.4-billion shabu shipment issue.
