Mayor, please don’t object, RDC asks

THE Regional Development Council (RDC) 7 is asking Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama to support the widening and improvement of intersections in 24 key areas of the city.

These road projects have been identified by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) as “priority projects” in its Roadmap Study for Sustainable Urban Development in Metro Cebu.

The study covered several areas.

It included the formulation of a long-term roadmap to realize the Mega Cebu 2050 vision; preparation of detailed action plans for short-term (2020), long-term (2030) and ultra long-term (2050) priority projects; and the production of a hazard map of Metro Cebu.

The Mega Cebu vision seeks to make Cebu more livable, more competitive and more sustainable.

In a letter to Rama, RDC Vice Chairperson and National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) 7 Director Efren Carreon said the 24 road projects are among the short-term projects identified by Jica.

Out of the 24, 12 road sections were proposed for widening and 12 major intersections were identified for improvement.

For the road widening, the areas identified are D. Jakosalem Ext. (from Gorordo to Gen. Maxilom Ave.), Guadalupe Road (from M. Velez St. to Guadalupe), Archbishop Reyes Ave. (from Gorordo to M.L. Quezon Ave.), Cebu South Expressway (from Leon Kilat St. to Mambaling), Tupas St. Ext., Salinas Drive, Gov. M. Cuenco Ave. Ext., Gorordo Ave.

Ext., Northern Ring Road (from Talamban to Liloan), Lahug Airport Road Ext., F. Jaca St. and the area from the Cebu South Coastal Road to Talisay City.

Jica recommended that several intersections be flared.

These are the intersections of Juan Luna Ave. and Cardinal Rosales Ave., M. J. Cuenco Ave. and A. Soriano Ave. as well as Archbishop Reyes Ave. corner Juan Luna Ave., P. del Rosario St. corner Leon Kilat St. and V. Sotto St. corner Arellano St.

Other sites are the intersections of Gen. Maxilom Ave. with these areas: M.J. Cuenco Ave., Gorordo Ave., Rahmann St., Jakosalem St., and Juana Osmeña St.

“The above-cited road sections and selected major intersections, if widened and improved, respectively, will ease the increasing traffic congestion in Metro Cebu,” said Carreon

“In view of this, we would like to solicit your (Rama) written full support with no objection for the above-cited projects,” he added.

Since the projects are considered a priority, Carreon said RDC 7 will be requesting Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson to include these in the agency’s infrastructure program for 2016.

He said Singson has already expressed his support for the Metro Cebu Sustainable Urban Development Roadmap Projects when it was presented last April 10.

Sun.Star Cebu tried to get a statement from Rama about RDC 7’s request but he was not yet available at press time as he was attending an event.

The mayor, in previous interviews, has expressed support for the widening of roads and flaring of some intersections.
