100-bed hospital opens in Mactan

RESIDENTS in Mactan Island can look forward to new and advanced medical services with the opening of ARC Hospitals Mactan (ARC Mactan) in 2018.

It will open the first two levels of the hospital by January, which will house the outpatient department covering adult medicine, pediatric medicine and women’s health. Also opening three months from now is the hospital’s pharmacy, diagnostics, laboratory and radiology departments.

ARC Mactan will be in full swing by March or April of 2018.

“The hospital is already 75 percent complete. We are now on the finishing works,” said Kerbasi Gilen Ugarte, ARC project development director.

ARC Mactan will be a Department of Health licensed 100-bed secondary hospital situated on a 3.4-hectare property in Sitio Malinao, Barangay Agus, Lapu-Lapu City. It is the flagship medical center owned by the Alegrado family, which owns the Bluewater Resorts chain.

ARC Mactan’s speciality services include anesthesiology, cardiology, colorectal surgery, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, infectious disease, medical oncology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, psychiatry, renal medicine, respiratory medicine, rheumatology, urology and dental services.

To provide quality, efficient, and advanced medical services, medical director Alex Alegrado said the institution has formed strategic alliances with local and international organizations like John Hopkins (Singapore), Icon Australia, Napier and Mind Ray.

“These provide our local medical tram access to cutting-edge medical research, resources and global referrals in resolving health care challenges. It means viable alternatives will be available domestically, minimizing the need to go abroad and avail of the expensive medical procedures and treatments,” said Alegrado.

Moreover, the new hospital will be run under Napier’s Hospital Information System (HIS), making it one of the digital hospitals in Cebu and in the country.

After completion of the hospital, Ugarte said they will pursue development of the other phases of the project, which will complement the health care services such as the construction of a food theme park, a walking trail, and a public garden, among others.

Ugarte also disclosed the company’s other expansion interests such as putting up a medical school, expansion of the hospital, the possibility of erecting serviced- apartments or a nursing home.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza welcomed the Alegrados’ latest investment in Mactan, saying this will help address the demand for health services of the island.

Radaza said the island’s population is growing at four percent annually, which doubled the demand for the delivery of basic services. She added that ARC Mactan is a welcome addition to the city’s growing investments.

Julie Alegrado-Vergara, chief executive officer of ARC Hospitals, said they are eyeing expansions to other areas like Bohol and Butuan, where the family also operates resort hotels.
