A THIRD-YEAR high school student was injured after he was shot by his schoolmate, while four others were arrested for alleged illegal possession of firearms outside their school campus at Barangay Banago, Bacolod City last week.

Senior Inspector Ruel Culanag of Police Station 3 said Sunday the 16-year-old student of Domingo Lacson National High School (DLNHS) suffered wounds in his head when his schoolmate, whose name is being withheld by the police, accidentally shot him using an improvised firearm or pin gun.

Culanag said victim was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital while the suspect fled.

He said at about 10 a.m. Thursday, the victim was threatened by the suspect using an improvised gun, and accidentally pulled the trigger.

He added the suspect evaded arrest and they are still awaiting the family of the victim to file charges against him.

Culanag claimed that while they were conducting a follow-up operation to apprehend the suspect in shooting of the 16-year-old, four students aged 14 and 17, were arrested in front of DLNHS for carrying improvised firearms.

Police recovered from the suspects’ improvised firearms or pin gun, two .38 caliber live ammunition, two live ammunition of 12 gauge shotgun, and one pill box.

The four suspects are in the custody of Social Development Center.

The students told the police that they are carrying firearms in order to defend themselves against the other groups in their school campus.

Culanag said they will coordinate today with the guidance officer of DLNHS and the parents of the students to discuss the case.

If the parents will assure to discipline their children, Culanag said he will recommend to release the suspects but DLNHS should also implement disciplinary action against them.

To avoid similar incident, Culanag said the schools in Bacolod City should implement security measures to ensure the safety their students.(MAP)
