Sara spearheads coastal cleanup

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio led the launching of BantayDagat, a coastal clean-up program, at Isla Suerte, Times Beach, Barangay 76-A yesterday morning to champion the protection of the environment and marine resources.

Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokesperson Police Senior Inspector Ma.TeresitaGaspan said yesterday that around 300 police officers were deployed by director Police Senior Superintendent Alexander Tagum to show support to the city’s effort and vowed to conduct similar activities in line with this advocacy.

“This aims to promote clean and healthy environment within our seashores and territorial waters,” Gaspan said.

The coastal clean-up was participated by different local government offices, barangay officials, and law enforcement agencies. The activity started at around 5:30 a.m. where they cleared and collected trashes from coastlines.

“This is an initiated project of the city government headed by our beloved City Mayor through an Executive Order enjoining everyone to participate in the coastal clean-up of all coastal areas within Davao City,” Gaspan said.

During Duterte-Carpio’s State of the Nation Address, she said that the BantayDagat group is a complementary project to BantayBukid where they will be the one who will secure the water bodies of the city from illegal activities and also safeguard its cleanliness.

“They will be in charge of the sea and coastal areas. We have allocated funds to buy an off-site garbage collector for trash that has found its way into the sea,” she said.

Gaspan, meanwhile, said the activity will be undertaken every first and third Saturday of the month.
