2 Ermita tanods indicted for murder of ‘burglar’

THE Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor has indicted two village watchmen from Barangay Ermita for allegedly conspiring to kill a suspected burglar who reportedly tried to escape last Oct. 10.

Prosecutor Noel Cellona found evidence to charge Junnel Sanchez and Jerome Abanto with murder before the Regional Trial Court.

Sanchez and Abanto allegedly conspired to kill Lendon Abadinas past midnight of Oct. 10 while they were transporting the suspect to the Carbon Police Station in Barangay Ermita.

“The accused, mutually helping each other, with deliberate intent, suddenly attacked Abadinas by shooting him with a .45 caliber pistol, which caused the latter’s death,” reads the charge sheet. Murder is a non-bailable offense.

The case stemmed from the murder complaint filed by police against the tanods earlier this month.

Abanto arrested Abadinas after he allegedly pulled off a burglary in one of the houses in Ermita.

Sanchez allegedly shot Abadinas when he tried to escape while he is being transported to the police station.

Witnesses said that Abanto manhandled Abadinas when the latter refused to sign a piece of paper.

Abanto allegedly handcuffed the hands of Abadinas and wrapped his mouth with a masking tape.

Abanto later pulled Abadinas out of the police station’s detention cell and turned over the suspect to Sanchez.

Abadinas was then allegedly dragged by Sanchez outside of the detention cell, which is located near the barangay hall, and shot him dead.

Abadinas sustained a gunshot wound on his chest.

Police had questioned who was Abadinas’ robbery victim but the tanods reportedly refused to cooperate.

Sanchez and Abanto later surrendered to Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, who turned them over to the police. (GMD)
