Libago, Capilitan dominate Nazareth kiddies chess tilt

EDVEL Lauren Libago and Zhaoyu Capilitan shared the spotlight in the 1st Max “Jon-Jon” Rodriguez Chess Kiddies Tournament concluded last Friday, April 27, at the Nazareth gym in Cagayan de Oro City.

Libago, an incoming Grade 7 student of Corpus Christi School, topped the category two for Grades 4-6 with 5.5 points after the final sixth round.

He finished with a half point lead over second placer Joel Lawrence Hoy, who tallied five points in the tournament.

Joegavin Garcia landed third place, while Rhea Jean Canino, Althea Canas, Juan Ryu Bagonoc, Lance Rafael Magloyuan, Pete Xander Ganzon, Joy Ann Faith Tiro and ASEAN Age Group gold medalist Ruelle Canino rounded up the prize circle from fourth to tenth places, respectively.

Capilitan, on the other hand, dominated category one for Grade 1-3 with a clean 6-0 win-loss record.

Capilitan, a grade one pupil of Fr. Masterson Elementary School, was a full-point ahead against a bunch of 5-pointers composed of Samantha Balquin, Jesuah Lagunay, Jethro Renz Bagonoc and Lj Getubig.

From a four-way tie, however, Balquin claimed the second place after acquiring high tie-break points.

Lagunay settled for third, while Bagonoc and Getubig placed fourth and fifth, in that order.

Occupying sixth to tenth places were Dalagan Lara, Zesley Van Galgao, Roehl Ian Jamisola, Russel Canino and Karl Ian Dalauta.
