Committees for 2018 Kadayawan Festival created

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio last April 23 signed an executive order creating the executive committee and sub-committees of the 2018 Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival.

Executive Order No. 08 Series of 2018 appoints her as the chairperson with City Administrator Zuleika Lopez as her official representative. Assistant city administrator lawyer Tristan Dwight Domingo is the vice-chair.

Among the members of the Execom are: Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, Chair of the Committee on Tourism and Beautification, Ermelinda Gallego of the City Budget Office, Regina Rosa Tecson of the City Tourism Office, and the Incumbent Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative.

The EO mandates that the Execom shall plan and ensure the smooth coordination of programs, events, and activities.

They execom is also tasked to 1) encourage greater private sector participation in the staging of all events and activities, 2) ensure the optimal exposure of the Festival both locally and internationally, 3) find ways and means to support the effective implementation of programs, events, and activities during the celebration, and 4) invite and/or call for a meeting all national and city government offices, as well as any private person or entity to ensure the successful staging of the Festival and perform such other acts that are necessary to effectively and meaningfully carry out its mandated functions.

This year marks the 33rd year of the Kadayawan Festival in Davao City. It is celebrated in the city every third week of August.

Davao City Information Officer Jefry Tupas, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao last April 2, said that the direction of the city is to ensure the success of the Kadayawan Festival because recent events such as the Alveo Ironman 70.3 held in the city has drawn worldwide attention.

"The [Ironman event] is very successful, we cannot deny that and we also want for Kadayawan to be the same," he said.

He said the Ironman event gave the city opportunity to plan more and to think of better things to do.

Last year, the Davao City Tourism and Operations Office (CTOO) recorded a total of 185,660 tourist arrivals, based on hotel occupancy, during the Kadayawan season. (KVC)
