7T youth beat Comelec's registration deadline

ABOUT 7,301 youth responded the call of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to register during the holiday season, as an extension to the October 31 deadline last year.

The Supreme Court (SC) ordered a four-day registration extension conducted on December 21, 22, 23 and the 28th meant for first time registrants.

In Benguet 2,567 names were added to the list of voters.

La Trinidad pegged the highest number of registrants at 464, followed by Mankayan at 245 and Buguias with 178.

Provincial Elections Officer Elenita Tabangin hoped for Benguet youth to register to increase the province's voting power.

Atok town yielded 82 new voters, Bakun with 47, Bokod at 52, Itogon with 100, Kabayan with 31, Kapangan at 61.

Highland towns like Kibungan were able to peg 61 first time voters, while Sablan, Tuba and Tublay had 31, 82 and 91, respectively.

There are 140 barangays in Benguet with 1,237 precincts.

As of 2007 merged precincts were pegged at 915, with the new registrants. Tabangin said the number of precincts in the province will have to be altered.

Abra had the least registrants with 501 and Ifugao with 1,173 new registrants, in Apayao there were 595 new voters, Ifuago had 1,173, Apayao and Mt. Province with 884.
