Abap to limit hiring of foreigners

MANILA - After a successful campaign in the 25th Southeast Asian Games, the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) decided to temporarily freeze the hiring of Cuban coaches.

Abap executive-director Ed Picson cited the communication factor as among the reasons for their decision to just use Filipino coaches in their preparation for the 2010 Asian Games in December in Guangzhuo, China.

“For us, the no. 1 factor in coaching is still communication.

Even if you have all the knowledge but if you cannot communicate well with your boxers, it means nothing,” said Picson during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the PSC main dining hall.

However, Picson said that the decision is only temporary as they are also contemplating on hiring either Bulgarian or Hungarian coaches for the RP team’s preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

He said that a lot of European countries who are members of the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) are expressing willingness to help the Filipino puglists even to the extent of transferring knowledge and technology.
