Council lauds Cebu City 42K

THE Cebu City Council yesterday lauded organizers of the just-concluded Cebu City Marathon, which visitors dubbed as the best ever in the country.

In a resolution authored by City Councilor Edgardo Labella, a running buff himself, the body thanked those behind the event for making everyone proud.

He especially mentioned the Cebu Executive Runners Club for the well-organized run, particularly for introducing “high technology.”

City Councilor Sylvan Jakosalem said last Sunday was the first time outside Manila that the ChampionChip was introduced.

He heads the City Council committee on youth and sports development.

The ChampionChip timing device, used by the 21K and the 42K runners, helps organizers track each participant, particularly if they pass through the several checkpoints.

“The City is extending its congratulation and commendation to the Cebu Executive Runners Club as well as all members of the organizing committee, including City

Councilor Sylvan Jakosalem, for the very successful holding of the Cebu City Marathon,” Labella said.

He made the motion during the amendment portion of the agenda in yesterday’s regular session.

Jakosalem told colleagues that Manila runners and editors of running and health magazines were all praises at how the event was staged.

“(They said) it was the best marathon in the history of the Philippines,” the councilor said.

He thanked the City Traffic Operations Management for keeping vehicles off the route so that no untoward incident was reported.

The route stretches from the Asiatown It Park to the South Road Properties and back for the 21 K and 42K runners.

As sponsor of the event, the City Government, through a measure authored by Jakosalem, set aside P295,000 for the prizes.
