Negros police, Army pray for RP peacekeepers in Haiti

OFFICIALS from the Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office (Noppo), Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), 303rd Infantry Battalion and 61st Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army extended their solemn prayers for the safety of all 155 members of the Philippine Peacekeeping Forces in Haiti.

Haiti, a Caribbean country, was hit with the 7.0 magnitude of earthquake on January 12 at 4:53 p.m. that clobbered the French-speaking nation for at least 35 seconds.

Several members of police forces here in Bacolod City have been assigned to peacekeeping missions outside of the country, including former Station 1 Chief Joeresty Coronica.

Meanwhile, 303rd IB-CMO chief Major Nathaniel Villasor said Wednesday he was shocked of the report, reading in the AFP website that several members of the RP peacekeeping unit currently assigned in the country were trapped inside the buildings following the catastrophic earth shake.

The report, however, is not yet officially confirmed as the AFP, through their website, said the communication system in the country is totally down after the string earthquake hit Haiti.

Villasor said aside from fighting in the battleground, military and police also can be killed in any causes of the natures, like any ordinary people.

"We really do hope and pray that our RP peacekeeping contingents are safe and okay," said Villasor.

AFP said they had been contacting Philippine Peacekeeping Team commander Lieutenant Colonel Lope Dagoy but can't reach the official as of the press time.

The 155-RP peacekeeping team was sent their in August 2009 and is bound to go back home in February this year when they complete the six-month peacekeeping mission in a once-torn nation.
