Ballet Philippines' 'Masterworks'

AH, BALLET, that classical dance form that looks so effortless when the dancers execute their steps and poses with a smile on their faces, arms so graceful either wide or akimbo, and toes pointed so sharply it is a wonder they can dance at all.

There are also the dreamy costumes, lifting musical accompaniment, and the exciting story the dance conveys, all giving you a completely mesmerizing experience that only a ballet show can give.

Ballet shows are rare in Davao, so it is always met with great pleasure when one comes to town.

On February 11, Ballet Philippines will perform "Masterworks", a showcase of their best works in celebration of its 40th year as the country's "premier dance company and one of the dance stalwarts in Southeast Asia."

It is no surprise that "Masterworks" will be staged in Davao; after all, the new president of the Ballet Philippines Foundation is Margie Moran Floirendo.

Margie is the chair of the Southern Philippines Foundation for the Arts, Culture & Ecology or Space, which she and the board members created to bring in more events in culture and the arts to Davao.

It was Space that also brought us memorable productions such as the ballet "Cinderella," the musical theater plays "Sino ka ba, Jose Rizal? Alikabok, Magnificat and several concerts of the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers.

All these gave Davao the opportunity to sate our hunger for refined entertainment. For some of us, it was also a pleasant excuse to dress up and go out for a night of artful appreciation.

Space brings Ballet Philippines "Masterworks" to Davao in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission for Culture & the Arts (NCCA).

The show will be held at the Central Bank Convention Hall at 3 p.m. for the matinee and 7 p.m. for the gala show.

Ballet Philippines is a multi-awarded ballet institution in the country, performing all over the world and reaping accolades for their exquisite performances.

"Masterworks" showcases their most popular contemporary and classical performances, featuring the works of Ms. Agnes Locsin, Alice Reyes, Denisa Reyes, Alden Lugnasin, among others. The Davao show will have Paul Morales as artistic director.

Admission is P200 (Matinee), P300 and P500 (Gala). Get your tickets now before they run out; visit the SPACE office at the Damosa Market Basket or call them at 2351776 or 09177054759 and look for Leda Jacinto. You can also get tickets at Villa Margarita, Alsons Properties at Bonifacio Street, and Locsin's Ballet Studio.

On February 11, dress up for the night and watch this exhilarating ballet show with your family or friends. Well see you there.
