Mayor offers SRP space to national gov’t offices

CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday has agreed to the request of the Court of Appeals (CA) to be transferred to the South Road Properties (SRP).

The CA is renting the building where it now holds office.

Osmeña even wanted other “high pedestrian traffic” national government offices, like the National Statistics Office (NSO), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), to also transfer to the SRP.

He said the City will set aside for them the area at the back of the welcome hill, which is visible right after one leaves the viaduct from Plaza Independencia to enter the SRP.

He said he had dinner recently with CA representatives and he was asked about the possibility of donating a space for their office.

“We were discussing the transfer of the CA to the SRP. When they asked me, I said the place where I can put them (CA), where it would not hurt us (City Hall) much, is on the other side of the welcome hill, where a colonial building can be built,” the mayor said.

“The CA will have access to the park on the welcome hill. We will include the other offices that have high pedestrian traffic,” he added.

He said that at night, occupants of the CA and the other national agencies can use the park as a parking lot.

“As far as I am concerned, it’s a very little financial loss because it (the presence of the CA) will enhance the financial value of the SRP. The other consideration also is that we’re making it easier for the people to go to the CA,” Osmeña said.

Another national agency that the mayor has promised a space at the SRP is the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Two years ago, he also said the Cebu City Government would donate two hectares of the SRP to Cordova town as a gesture of goodwill for agreeing to accommodate the Badjaos from Barangay Mambaling.
