La Salle stakes spotless record (4:29 p.m.)

MANILA -- After scoring a perfect 7-0 in the first round, defending women’s champion La Salle starts its second round campaign against Adamson in the 72nd UAAP volleyball tournament Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Archers of coach Ramil de Jesus take the court at 4 p.m. aiming to duplicate their three-set victory over the Lady Falcons during their first meeting last December 13.

The Falcons are in three-way tie at second place (5-2) with fierce rival University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tigresses and resurgent Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Lady Eagles.

In the men’s side, Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws took only 52 minutes to grab the solo lead after dispatching University of the East (UE) Red Warriors at the 11 a.m. match.

Quarter scores are 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 for the Tamaraws.

Nestor Molate zoomed with 16 points, 9 blocks and two service aces while teammates Rodolfo Labrador and Joshua Alcarde combined for 28 hits for the Morayta-based squad.

The Tamaraws improved to 6-2 while the Red Warriors slipped to 4-4 with the loss.

In the earlier contest, Ateneo Blue Eagles stopped the struggling National University (NU), 25-15, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23 to move up to 3-6.

Duane Teves tallied 15 points, 12 spikes and two blocks to banner the Eagles on that 92-minute action.

NU meanwhile is still weeping at tail end 1-7, after the loss. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
