8-year-old boy shines

AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy, who is a son of a policeman, shined in his first boxing bout last Saturday’s Golpe-Golpe na Barangay (Boxing at the Barangay) at Cabaluay, 17 kilometers east of Zamboanga City.

Second district Congressman Erico Basilio Fabian, who initiated the Golpe-Golpe na Barangay project, said Arvie Ferrer, 8, of Pasonanca village, defeated Angelito Canoy of Tugbungan in the 26-kilogram division.

Fabian said last Saturday's fight was the first time for Arvie, who is a second grader at Pasonanca Elementary School, to fight after he undergone a one-year formal training in boxing.

He said Ferrer has displayed an impressive performance as he punched and moved around the ring during his fight with Canoy.

He said last Saturday’s event also featured 10 other fights ranging from Mosquito weight to Lightweight Divisions.

Fabian started with his Golpe-Golpe na Barangay sports program since he was still a city councilor to promote boxing and to discover new talents.

Fabian encouraged the boxers to continue training for them to reach their goal of becoming a champion in the future. (Bong Garcia)
