FOR a highlands to islands experience, Davao Oriental definitely got you covered this summer with close-to-nature trips and plethora of exciting outdoor activities.

Two weeks ago, the AFP-PNP Southern Mindanao press corps got an invitation from the 67th Infantry Battalion based in Bagangga, Davao Oriental to cover an event in the municipality of Caraga and since we’re already there, we seized the moment to explore what the province has to offer to its visitors.

On the first day of our workcation, we visited Cateel’s iconic attraction, the famous Aliwagwag Falls and Eco Park.

The panoramic view and the relaxing sound of the streams of water cascading on the stairway rock formations of Aliwagwag Falls gave me a sense of relief and I couldn’t help but utter: “The long trip is all worth it!” Guests could also try zipline and even cross the monkey bridge with the scenic waterfalls underneath.

On the second day of our Davao Oriental escapade, we had the chance to take a dip at Bangaga’s famous Mainit Hot Spring. Though the place is not that developed yet in terms of facility, the experience was still superb. The cold weather at that time is perfect for the dip into warm water. If find the water soothing as it takes away the stress and body pain.

The next destination we dropped by was at Bangaga Sunrise Boulevard. I saw a stretch of quite eerie leafless mangrove branches which are said to be the remnants of Typhoon Pablo back in 2012. It depicts how the town was able to rise from the calamity and still found beauty amid the chaos.

My fellow media practitioners have been talking about San Victor and since it’s just few kilometers away from the Boulevard, we took the chance to explore it. The beach is separated from the mainland and we have to ride a motor boat to get there. For just few minutes, we arrived at its coastline. The place is pretty amazing though not that spectacular among the beaches I’ve visited. It is not ideal to visit there during rainy season.

Aside from enjoying the sea, sand and shore, it is also best to tour around the island. There are more epic views behind it such as the toppled huge trees perfect for picture taking.

Our next stop was in Pusan Point Eco Park and Science Discovery Center where we were able to experience the breathtaking scenery of the place located in Barangay Santiago, Caraga, Davao Oriental.

Apart from the scenic view, it also features an interactive Science Discovery Center where tourists who are science-inclined will really enjoy. It has a planetarium, a galaxy walk, and a section dedicated to Astronomy, Chemistry, Technology, Energy, Geography, and other related topics.

Visitors will not only be filled with its amazing view but will also have a glimpse of the unique culture and rich heritage of the people in Caraga.

With so many places to visit, Davao Oriental is a must-go destination this summer.
