PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed former police chief Ronald dela Rosa and former military chief Rey Leonardo Guerrero to new government positions, after the two reached the mandatory retirement age of 56 for uniformed personnel.
Duterte fulfilled his vow to tap Dela Rosa as the director general of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) when he signed the latter's appointment paper on April 30.
Duterte first announced on December 12, 2017 his plan to appoint Dela Rosa, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) "Sinagtala" Class of 1986, as BuCor's chief.
Dela Rosa, former chief of the Philippine National Police, reached retirement age on January 21, but the President extended his term for three months until April 21. He was replaced by PNP chief Oscar Albayalde on April 19.
Meanwhile, Duterte on April 26 named Guerrero, the former chief-of-staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), as the new Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) administrator.
Like Dela Rosa, Guerrero's service as AFP chief was extended until April prior to his new appointment.
Guerrero, a member of the PMA "Maharlika" Class of 1984, replaced Marcial Amaro III, who was sacked in January for supposed excessive foreign travels.
Guerrero will serve as Marina chief until July 11, 2022.
Apart from the two, the President on April 30 picked Valfrie Tabian as BuCor deputy director.
