Paralytic dies in Lapu fire

A 45-YEAR-OLD paralytic man died in a fire after shouting at his sister to save first his young nephews and nieces.

Domingo Nayra was left behind in the family’s house in Sitio Sewage, Barangay Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City past midnight yesterday.

His sister Mispha, 27, said the heat woke her. She shouted after seeing the fire at the head of her bed.

She failed to carry her older brother as he was heavy. The flames spread quickly in the house, most of which was made of wood.

Nayra himself shouted at Mispha, known to her kin as Pang, to save herself first and her children.

“Pang! Pang! Gawas mo! Kuhaa ninyo ang mga bata. Pasagdi lang ko ninyo, luwasa ang inyong kaugalingon,” Mispha recalled Nayra shouting.

Nayra had been bedridden in the past four years after he suffered injuries in a vehicular accident. His wife had died of breast cancer.

Investigators have yet to determine what caused the fire, which destroyed two houses and damaged three others. Lapu-Lapu City Fire Marshal Rogelio Bongabong said they received the fire alarm at 12:07 a.m. Seven minutes later, the blaze was controlled and kept from destroying other houses in the village.
