Bacolod traffic office told to enforce bike-friendly lanes

THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution requesting the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) to strictly implement bike-friendly lanes in the city.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Cindy Rojas, was approved during the regular session Wednesday, May 9.

Rojas said it has been observed that bike-friendly lanes in the city cannot be used as to its purpose because it has been utilized by motor vehicles as parking areas.

Rojas noted that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has made markings that separate the bike lane from motor vehicle travel lane at designated public streets in the city.

“There is a need to closely monitor these bike-friendly lanes to ensure that it would be used by bike users,” Rojas said.

She said City Ordinance No. 09-17-808 dated January 25, 2017, states that bike lanes promote healthful activities, environment-friendly as a mode of transportation, and it helps the safety of the bikers while using designated public streets.

The said ordinance also states that the creation of bike lane network in the City allows the safety travel of the bikers, motor vehicles and pedestrians in specific public streets, Rojas said.
