Corton, Sangiao dominates Kapangan Invasion

JON Chris Corton proved he is ready for the big league but 15–year–old Jhanlo Mark Sangiao stole the limelight with his impressive debut during the Team Lakay Championship: Kapangan Invasion 3.

Sangiao, son of Team Lakay coach Mark easily brought down 25-year-old Danilo Dangalan in the first round with a ground and pound to earn his first victory in a jampacked Kapangan municipal gym.

The older Sangiao was also on the cage side to witness the mixed martial arts (MMA) amateur debut of his son who is also a national Muay Thai gold medalist.

Corton in the main event dominated Jesstoni Lim of Engage Fight Camp to win a second-round TKO via ground and pound.

The 26-year-old Kapangan native displayed improved grappling skills that complemented his karate and MMA skills.

Team Lakay’s Javie Espada returned to the cage and scored a unanimous decision against Rusha Mae Bayacsan in the only K1 female bout of the night. Both fighters have impressed the female crowd with their striking and defense skills.

Air Force serviceman and MMA fighter Godwin Langabayan of Buguias, Benguet won over Lakay’s Jared Almazan via referee stoppage due to strikes in round one while Benjie Tabaronza of D’ Elements MMA stopped Lakay’s Aldwin Nicdao with a TKO due to strikes in round two.

Wallen Del Rosario of Bylon Club de Jiu Jitsu overpowered Estrada Donga-as of Lakay with a second round TKO while Mikael Kristian Ortiz of Lakay San Fernando, La Union won over Dexter Estropia of Mariveles Fitness Club via rear naked choke.

Mike Dawagui of Max Fusion won via unanimous decision against Ison Aguilar of Muay Boran while Mark Valerio of Engage Fight Camp also won via decision against Morteza Minbashi of Iran.

Meanwhile, Felex Cantores, 16, of Kafagway MMA overcome the onslaught of Carlo Buminaang, 24, of Team Lakay in the K1 event of the night.

The Sablan native Cantores has absorbed powerful combinations from Buminaang but has managed to fight toe-to-toe until the third and final round with Buminaang winning the bout via unanimous decision.

Kapangan Mayor Manny Fermin thanked Team Lakay for organizing the out-of-town MMA-K1 tournament that hopes to discover future MMA champions. The event is also backed by Sta. Clara Power Corp. and Peregrine. (Roderick Osis)
