Limpag: The Mayor’s Cup

THE Mayor’s Cup is an excellent sports program, whether it be for basketball, volleyball or football. But what I’ve noticed, not just in this administration, but in previous ones, is that after the first Mayor’s Cup for anything, there’s rarely a second edition.

Or, if another administration takes over, it’s back to another first even if there was a previous Mayor’s Cup.

With the way it is being done, it’s just a waste of money. It seems they are just looking for an excuse to spend taxpayers’ money on something that could have been done better.

We had the Cebu City Mayor’s Cup for football last year and none this year. We are having the first mayor’s cup for volleyball in the University of San Carlos and I hope it won’t be the first and last, judging by how few people watched and even how some of the teams didn’t bother to show up for their games.

I hope there’s a way to improve this, to institutionalize the Cebu City Mayor’s Cup so Cebuanos are assured of one regardless of who sits at City Hall. It’s a bit ironic, though, that it is in the time of Tomas Osmeña, that the Mayor’s Cup was expanded to include other sports and we all know that Tommy doesn’t project himself to be athletic, unlike Mike Rama, who scored what, 89 points in a game?

So, instead of a one-time affair, I hope the Mayor’s Cup will be an annual activity for Cebu City, and one way to do that is to include it in the Cebu City Sports Commission program.

We’ve had the Mayor’s Cup for basketball, football and volleyball, and I hope funds for annual editions of those tournaments will be included in the CCSC.

Look, it’s ironic even that it’s the Cebu Province that’s benefitting from the Cebu City Mayor’s Cup for volleyball as the team is using it as its final tuneup for the Philippine National Games.

Last year’s Mayor’s Cup for football was used as a tuneup for the Palarong Pambansa-bound team, so if plotted correctly, the next basketball and volleyball editions could serve the same purpose, prepare a Cebu or Region 7 team for the Palarong Pambansa.

Hey, perhaps the next editions could be held in April next year? When Cebu City hosts the unifed training of Central Visayas for the Palarong Pambansa?
