Editorial: Reorganization looms

THE Senate is expected to revamp its leadership after a draft resolution signed by the majority of the senators came out this week.

The resolution is supporting the reorganization at the upper chamber with Majority Floor Leader Vicente Sotto III as the looming Senate President.

The supposed signatories are Senators Juan Edgardo Angara, Nancy Binay, Joseph Victor Ejercito, Francis Escudero, Sherwin Gatchalian, Richard Gordon, Gregorio Honasan II, Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda, Manny Pacquiao, Ralph Recto, Joel Villanueva, Cynthia Villar, and Juan Miguel Zubiri.

“By a majority of all the senators, Sen. Vicente C. Sotto III is hereby elected as the new Senate President to discharge the duties and powers granted to him by the rules of the Senate,” the resolution read.

“It is hereby resolved by a majority vote of all the senators, to express its sense to reorganize its leadership, and hereby electing Senator Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III as the new Senate President,” it added.

However, current Senate President Aquilino Pimental III vehemently denied there are moves to replace him.

A report from Rappler said that Pimental and Sotto have agreed to a term-sharing.

This is because Pimentel, a close ally of the administration, is up for a re-election bid.

Pimentel is expected to remain with the majority bloc. Usually, when Senate presidents are removed from their posts, they were transferred to the minority bloc.

But not in the case of Pimentel, as he is the president of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), the party of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Reports said that Zubiri will replace Sotto as the majority leader.
