Soldier charged for gun ban violation

AN ARMY integree arrested for gun ban violation was subjected Wednesday to an inquest proceeding before the City Prosecutor’s Office.

Corporal Niño Asanji was arrested last Monday at the passenger terminal 1 at the Port of Zamboanga carrying a caliber.45 pistol without the supporting documents allowing him to carry the firearm.

Senior Inspector Joel Tuttuh said the combined 9th Maritime Mobile Group and Port policemen have confiscated from Asanji a caliber .45 pistol with 36 live ammunitions.

Tuttuh said Asanji surrendered his weapon for recording purposes.

Tuttuh, however, said Asanji failed to present any documents to show he is authorized to carry the firearm when requested by the maritime and port policemen.

Asanji, a native of Tawi-Tawi, is an Army integree assigned in the nearby province of Basilan.

Senior Superintendent Edwin De Ocampo, Zamboanga City police officer-in-charge, said Asanji is the fourth gun ban violator arrested in this southern port city since the implementation of the election gun ban took effect nationwide last January 10. (Bong Garcia)
