LA CASTELLANA – A week prior to the scheduled start, La Castellana National High School (LCNHS) in southern Negros Occidental town yesterday, May 21, kicked off the 2018 Brigada Eskwela.

Participated by hundreds of volunteers from both the government and private sectors, it is the first Brigada Eskwela conducted in the province this year.

Themed "Pagkakaisa para sa Handa, Ligtas at Matatag na Paaralan tungo sa Magandang Kinabukasan,” the national simultaneous activity is originally scheduled on May 21 to 25.

However, it was moved on May 28 to June 2 due to the closing of the Brigada Eskwela and the opening of the Oplan Balik Eskwela in Marawi City.

LCNHS followed the original schedule as under Department Order No. 85, regional offices of the Department of Education (DepEd) may opt to start anytime after the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Elections.

DepEd Negros Occidental Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Portia Mallorca, who spoke at the opening rites, said pursuing the activity on its original schedule shows the commitment of the school.

“The schedule is immaterial, but every commitment counts,” Mallorca said, adding that DepEd-Negros Occidental is so inspired and amazed of the persistence of the school and participation of the community.

The annual activity is mainly aimed at bringing together all education stakeholders to participate and contribute their time, effort, and resources to prepare public school facilities for the opening of the school year on June 4.

Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, who was present at the activity, said Brigada Eskwela is one of the continuing programs of the government even under “changing” administrations.

Lacson assured continuous support to the school through one provision of equipment like projectors.

Moreover, LCNHS is vying for the Hall of Fame Award for Brigada Eskwela Best Implementer Mega School (Secondary Level) category in the country this year.

School principal Tressa Elbanbuena said the national award was the result of the dedication of the school and its strong collaborations with various partners and stakeholders.

“Our hearts are filled with happiness. The warm presence of our partners motivates us to further do our best in making our school conducive to learning,” she added.

For her part, La Castellana Mayor Rhumyla Nicor-Mangilimutan said that the achievement of LCNHS is also attributed to the strong support of the local government.

Nicor-Mangilimutan said the municipal government has been extending assistance to all schools in the locality, especially during Brigada Eskwela. These include manpower, financial assistance, paints, and cement, among others.

“The concept of Brigada Eskwela is maintaining and improving the school through partners and stakeholders including the local government unit,” she said, adding that “the local government unit (LGU) plays a vital role in this endeavor, and La Castellana is very strong in implementing the special education fund.”
