Moresco aims to be a 'world-class power provider'

THE Misamis Oriental Rural Electric Cooperative (Moresco) 1 has its vision set in becoming a world class power provider as it look into improving its operations to compete not only locally but also globally.

"Moresco-1 is fast growing, rising, booming because this is the most strategic franchise area in the Mindanao. Mabuhay ang Moresco-1 and hopefully, by year 2022 we will be Asia provider and by year 2030 it will be world class provider," Moresco-1 Board president Agustin Caberte said in his welcome speech during the start of the week-long celebration of the electric cooperative's golden anniversary on May 15 in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental.

As such, Engineer Jovel Ubay-ubay, Moresco-1 general manager, said in order for the electric cooperative to survive under the competitive environment, their operations will have to be efficient.

"The purpose really is to attract investors from other countries to invest in our franchise areas. So we were able to locate internal and external factors that affect the operation of the cooperative," Ubay-ubay said, adding that they were also able to look into the challenges in relation to their consumers' behavior.

"Since we have the influx of commercial investment consumers, their behavior on usage of power is different so we have to address, adjust with their own requirement," the general manager said.

Due to the increasing demand of electric consumers, Ubay-ubay said Moresco-1's distribution system is in need of upgrading, shifting from a manually-operated powerlines into a remote-operated distribution system.

"Now at this time, we are envisioning to have a Smart Grid distribution system," he said.

The general manager also mentioned that they have started designing their electrical lines to be resistant to weather disturbances such as typhoon, and have provided appropriate tools and advance equipment to their workforce.

"And we also have the environment and sustainable energy source. So we have to develop hydro renewable energy as one of the alternative source of power," Ubay-ubay said.

To have a stable power supply for the industrial, commercial and residential consumers, the general manager said they have a diverse power, generator-based, coming from different technologies.

These and among others, according to Ubay-ubay, are Moresco-1's means to empower their consumer and strengthen their consumer relationship.

“In summary, for us to have a dynamic electric cooperative, we have to optimize our operations and system,” Ubay-ubay said.
